On May 22, 1973, Dr. Robert M. Metcalfe wrote a now-famous memo at Xerox PARC inventing Ethernet, the Internet packet plumbing standard, which as of today ships more than a billion new wired and WiFi portsper year. On June 4, 1979, he founded 3Com Corporation, which earned $5.7 billion in revenue in 1999 and joined HP in 2010. In 2006, Dr. Metcalfe received the National Medal of Technology for “leadership in the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet.”  He has also served as Advisory Director of the Metro Ethernet Forum since 2003 and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Nan Chen, MEF

Mr Nan Chen is known in the telecom/networking industry as the founding President of the MEF. The MEF has profoundly shaped the telecom and Internet industry by establishing Carrier Ethernet as the predominant technology and service for businesses, homes, mobile infrastructure, and for next generation networking of the Internet.

Under his leadership, MEF, has grown to over 200 members, and has become one of the major success stories in the new Internet age, from the definition of more than 40 industry standards to the historic definition of CE1.0 & CE2.0 and eminent certification programs (1000+ certificates) giving Carrier Ethernet a stamp of approval “ready for prime time”. Mr. Chen’s drive to unite standardization and certification with dynamic, global campaigns and strategic initiatives, helped make Carrier Ethernet one of the fastest growing areas in telecoms ($100b in 2017).

Mr. Chen is also Co-founder of CENX. He previously served as VP of Product Management & Marketing at Strix (acquired by private equity); VP of Marketing at Atrica (acquired by Nokia Siemens Networks); Director of Technology at Bay Networks/SynOptics (acquired by Nortel).

Mr Chen has received 30+ industry awards/accolades and 100,000+ citations in worldwide media (Google Nan Chen Ethernet). In his previous life, he was a record holder in pole vault at Beijing University with 2 MS & 1 BS degrees.

Tom Burns, Vice President and General Manager, Dell Networking

Tom Burns, a proven business executive with more than 25 years of experience, is the Vice President and General Manager of Dell Networking. He is responsible for all engineering, design, development and marketing of Dell networking strategy, products and solutions. Tom is also accountable for the sales performance and overall P&L for the Dell Networking portfolio. Dell Networking plays an integral role in how the company delivers innovative end-to-end IT solutions including servers, storage and converged infrastructures.

Prior to joining Dell, Tom was President, Enterprise and Strategic Industries at Alcatel-Lucent. A member of the Alcatel-Lucent Management Committee he was responsible for developing strategy and managing operations for two business units which accounted for all “non-carrier” activities. Tom was also President, Enterprise Network Solutions at Alcatel.

Tom earned a Business degree from the University of San Diego.

David Law, Distinguished Engineer at Hewlett-Packard NetworkingLaw David_1310

David Law is a Distinguished Engineer at Hewlett-Packard Networking and has worked on the specification and development of Ethernet products since 1989. Throughout that time he has been a member of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group where he has held a number of leadership positions. He served as the Vice-Chair of IEEE 802.3 from 1996 to 2008 and in 2008 was elected to Chair of IEEE 802.3. David has been a member of the IEEE-SA Standards Board since 2005, currently he serves as the Vice-Chair of the IEEE-SA Standards Board, and is Chair of the IEEE-SA Standards Board Patent Committee (PatCom). In 2000 he received the IEEE-SA Standards Medallion, 2009 he received the IEEE-SA Standards Board Distinguished Service award and in 2012 he received the IEEE-SA International Award. David has a BEng (hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland.
