January 2010 Newsletter
ADVA Optical Networking joined the Ethernet Alliance in December and has already jumped into action with its director for technical
marketing, Jim Theodoras elected as the chair for the Carrier Ethernet subcommittee on January 6th. Jim is very excited about his new role and has already articulated many exciting ideas about what the subcommittee will be doing in 2010. "2010 will be a banner year for Ethernet," commented Theodoras. "The Ethernet protocol continues to grow and spread into many new market areas, and has become the protocol of choice in the carrier space as well. However, carrier needs are not the same as those of the enterprise. ADVA Optical Networking joined the Ethernet Alliance to promote the community and present a cohesive industry voice. I am very honored to have been selected as a subcommittee chair and will work to ensure that the momentum of this key technology is forward."
At the November 2009 IEEE 802 Plenary, the IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) Working Group approved the formation of the 40G single-mode fiber (SMF) PMD Study Group. The Study Group will have its first meeting in New Orleans, LA January 28 and 29 and the Carrier Ethernet subcommittee will be supporting this work.

The Ethernet Alliance and OIF are officially working collaboratively to promote common electrical interface (CEI) for 25 Gbps. The OIF has been in development on this specification and targeting to use technology for upcoming 100 Gigabit Ethernet and higher speed technologies. Joel Goergen of Force10 Networks and Rod Smith of Tyco Electronics are serving as liaisons between the two organizations.
"The Ethernet Alliance looks forward to closer collaborations between our organization and the OIF," stated Brad Booth, Ethernet Alliance chair of the board. "The two organizations have a common interest in furthering this technology both for our members and our industries." The organizations will be announcing joint upcoming activities in the near future.
Please congratulate George Zimmerman as the newly appointed subcommittee technical chair of EEE. George hails from Solarflare where he serves as
the CTO and was a co-founder of the company. George is already hard at work planning for the first EEE interoperability event. The EEE subcommittee is going to have a very active 2010 as the industry prepares to embrace the new standards targeted for ratification this year.If you are interested in getting involved with the please visit http://members.ethernetalliance.org/apps/org/workgroup/eee/.

It is with great sadness, the Ethernet Alliance notes the passing of Dan Ray - a founder of Level One Communications. Many in this industry may remember Dan's contribution to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards process and the Ethernet industry in general. Dan was an entrepreneur to the core who had a love for life and technology. He will be sorely missed by those he knew and influenced, and the Ethernet Alliance offers its condolences to Dan's family and loved ones.
At the November 2010 Plenary Meeting the IEEE 802.3 Working Group approved the formation of a study group for 40G Single Mode Fiber PMD for the Carrier Client. The first meeting will be held at the IEEE 802.3 Interim Meeting in New Orleans January 28 and 29.
The Time Synchronization Task Force was approved at the November IEEE Plenary Meeting and the subsequent IEEE Standards Association December meeting. The Task Force will commence work on creation of the first draft specification at the IEEE 802.3 Interim Meeting in New Orleans.
