Test & Management Subcommittee Announces a New Marketing Chair!

The Ethernet Alliance is proud to announce Charles Seifert as the marketing chair of the Test & Management subcommittee. Charles Seifert is a Senior Product Manager for Ixia who is responsible for Ixia's Ethernet data communications test and measurement load modules.  Seifert has worked in the Ethernet test and measurement since the year 2000 specializing in 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), high-scale testing, and Layer-2/3 switch test systems. As a participating member of the 10GEA Seifert worked to improve the interoperability of 10GbE for the industry. Over the last several years, Seifert has worked with the Ethernet Alliance to promote the new 10GBASE-T technology. Prior to entering the telecommunications industry, Seifert spent over twenty years in advanced test and measurement in the semiconductor and microelectronics manufacturing industries.

The Test and Management Subcommittee will focus on aspects of IEEE 802 Ethernet standards to permit Ethernet Alliance members to build interoperable products that meet the market's expectations. These efforts will support the Ethernet industry's growth and competitiveness by moving beyond single point products and ideas to offering complete solutions.

SC08 - Ethernet Alliance Celebrates 35 Years of Ethernet SC08

The Ethernet Alliance will be participating at SC08 in Austin, Texas, November 17 - 20, where we will recognize the 35th anniversary of the invention of Ethernet. Show coordinators estimate more than 10,000 attendees and 265 exhibitors for this year's event. The Ethernet Alliance has upgraded to booth # 2514, so make plans now to visit the Ethernet Alliance as we demonstrate the following:

A converged 10 GbE network with a server cluster accessing two separate storage arrays.  The servers and iSCSI storage are connected by low latency Ethernet switches, and the Fibre Channel storage is accessed via an FCoE switch.  A variety of fiber and copper media will be used to demonstrate the flexibility of 10 GbE interface and cabling options, including passive/active CX4, 10GBASE-T, XFP and SFP+.  Each of the storage arrays has geological/seismic data that is processed by the server cluster, and the results are sent to a workstation that displays a geological oil well model in 3D.

Booth participants are Cisco, Extreme Networks, Force10 Networks, Fulcrum, Ixia, Mellanox, PanduitQLogic, Solarflare, Teranetics and Tyco Electronics.

Sun Microsystems Platinum Sponsor for the SC08 EAUP Networking Mixer

The Ethernet Alliance would like to thank Sun Microsystems, the Platinum Sponsor for the EAUP networking mixer we are hosting in conjunction with SC08. The mixer, to be held Tuesday, November 18 from 7-10 p.m. at Scholz Garten, in downtown Austin, will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ethernet. This networking mixer will be a unique opportunity for university students to interact and connect with well-known industry leaders who are members of the Ethernet Alliance.  Invitations are available to the more than 40 SC08 participating universities.   If you have a university you want to invite to the event, please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Benefits of Participating in the EA Booth

With the economy what it is today, participating in an EA booth is one of the more cost-effective means of displaying your technology at a convention.  Below are some of the benefits when demonstrating in an EA booth:

  • Booth Space with Furniture
  • Logo Display
  • Collateral Distribution
  • PR Representation
  • Leads generation
  • Management of Event
  • And so much more!
The estimated total cost for these services is over $20K.  Cost for participating in an EA booth is $5K.  Upcoming 2009 EA events include DesignCon, Ethernet Technology Summit and Interop.  For more information about participating in the EA booth, contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Overview of 10Gb/s EPON Status, Requirements and Applications

The wide adoption of 1G Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) (per IEEE std P802.3ahTM) provided a significant jump in access network capacity and created demand for greater bandwidth-intensive applications and services such as Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), Video-on-Demand (VoD) and high-grade internet protocol (IP) telephony known as Voice over IP (VoIP). To address these market demands, the IEEE P802.3av Task Force was created in September 2006 and its 10G-EPON draft builds upon the compatibility with the existing 10GEPON.

Data Center Bridging

Networks are the essential part of any modern data center and they must deliver reliability, availability and high performance. Enterprises rely on their data centers to run business operations, service providers rely on their data centers to generate revenues by delivering network services, and content providers rely on their data centers to distribute revenue-producing content. Ethernet is the most widely deployed networking technology today. Currently, it fulfills increasingly demanding requirements for a variety of business needs. But can Ethernet technology evolve to help data centers improve costeffectiveness and meet the demands for next-generation services?
