September 2008 - Big quarter for IP router vendors Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, Fujitsu, Foundry, NEC

Michael Foundry

Infonetics’ quarterly report, Service Provider Routers and Switches, shows Cisco posted a 15% gain in combined IP edge and core router revenue, giving them over half the worldwide market, a position they’ve maintained since 2005, despite growing competition. The biggest gain of the quarter was made by Fujitsu, who jumped from the #9 position to #6 worldwide. Huawei, Foundry, and NEC all posted strong double-digit gains in 2Q08, and Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent, the perennial #2 and #3 players (respectively) in the IP router market, each posted respectable single-digit revenue gains.

September 2008 – The State of WAN Services Adoption in Europe: 2008

Phil Sayer, Robert Whiteley, Christian Kane, Allison Herald

The migration from legacy data services to IP-based wide-area network (WAN) services in Europe is now largely complete, led by the largest multinational firms. Over the past year we have seen a 20% reduction in the number of enterprises that have no plans for MPLS VPNs, from 33% to 13%. At the same time, the adoption of carrier Ethernet services in Europe has grown very rapidly, and the use of Internet VPNs to carry low-priority traffic has become almost universal. The top WAN project in Europe this year is the upgrading of branch office connectivity to support server centralization projects. Cost leads over quality in the supplier selection stakes, but service quality is the top driver for the use of multisourcing. Europe continues to buy more managed WAN services than North America, driven by cost saving and the simplification of operational management.

August 2008 – Emerging WAN Services: Look Before You Leap

Robert Whiteley

As enterprises continue to migrate to emerging WAN services like Ethernet, it's easy to succumb to the path of least resistance by simply evaluating and migrating to the incumbent WAN provider's new offers. Think again. Forrester's evaluation of responses to Ethernet service requests for information (RFI) reveals few services providers are able to meet, or even understand, the service requirements of clients with rigorous network performance criteria. When contemplating major changes in critical telecommunications network services — such as migrating from traditional private lines to Ethernet — network infrastructure professionals must resist the temptation to make a hasty technology and service selection decision and instead, carefully assess providers' capabilities.

May 2008 - 10 GbE: Its Time Is Coming
Andrew Reichman, James Staten
Ten gigabit per second Ethernet (10 GbE) represents the next level of enterprise network bandwidth, with vendors hyping it as the next great capability. But as an IT infrastructure and operations professional, you must strike a balance between constant operational improvement and sound financial decision-making. So far, 10 GbE has been a high-end luxury for firms that want maximum performance regardless of cost, but that's changing fast. The per-port pricing gap between 10 GbE and alternate network options is narrowing rapidly as more vendors increase the competitive pressure on pricing for related components. So where will this technology truly matter, and when? This report looks at the impact of 10 GbE on infrastructure applications and provides guidance for the most effective transformation of your network.

March 2008 - Worldwide Telepresence 2008–2012 Forecast and Analysis
Nora Freedman, Abner Germanow, Lee Doyle, Courtney Munroe, Leslie Rosenberg
This IDC study examines the market outlook for telepresence for 2008–2012. These telepresence rooms use audio and visual technologies, interior design, and high-speed wide area network connections to mimic the experience of a face-to-face meeting, regardless of where the rooms are located.

"Competing vendors have certainly taken advantage of Cisco's marketing and presence in the market to help drive market adoption," says Nora Freedman, senior analyst in the Enterprise Networks group. "Yet telepresence is still a costly endeavor for organizations that require a solid business case for hard cost savings."
